Two Year 12 students from the CLF Post 16 have taken it upon themselves to assist teachers with a Year 8 Drama lesson on a weekly basis, in their free periods, at Bristol Metropolitan Academy, I went along to find out more…….
“So, I have Shamna Begum and Azeema Hussain with me.”
How did this all start?
Shamha: “So whenever we get some spare time we go and help the children, we go and help Miss Davis.”
Azmeena: “And we like working with younger children, and that’s want we want to do in the future.”
How long have you been doing this?
Shamha: “About two or three weeks and we want to carry on for the whole year.”
So you took this on yourselves to go and volunteer?
Shamha: “Yes, it gives us more opportunity to interact with younger children.”
What is the best part of working with these children?
Azmeena: “Getting to know them and making new friends, also helping them out, taking what they have come out with as their performance piece and getting them to stretch their ideas a little further.”
Shamha: Eventually I want to go on and work with children in primary school so this experience will be invaluable to me.”
Azmeena: “I am looking into working with children who are in hospital or perhaps educating the elderly so this is really helping me.”
What was the reaction of the students when you first started working with them, did they accept you?
Azmeena: “Once we got to know them they did, it is great fun and we now speak to them outside lessons as well and one of them actually called me Miss!! They now ask us if we are going to be coming to their lesson.”
How do the teachers feel about you helping them in their lessons?
Shamha: “They like it.”
Azmeena; “Plus they get extra help which means they can work with other groups.”
What types of roles would the teachers give you?
Shamha: “Well we just help the students out with their tasks, we give them more ideas and encourage them to work as teams.”
With the teacher still in the room would you like to eventually take the lead with the class?
Shamha: “Yes that is the plan and this would be great to build up our confidence even more.”
“Good luck to you both with whatever you do in the future and thank you for taking the time to talk to me.”
