A Bristol teacher set off on a charity ride to nowhere. Chris Baker a teacher at John Cabot Academy cycled 150 miles on an exercise bike in the academies reception to raise money for Action Medical Research.

Chris set off on this mammoth task at 8.00am and didn’t complete the ride until 3.00pm, the whole school day, having completed some 38,000 pedal strokes.

Although this day was not a teaching day for Chris, Chris spent part of the day marking student’s coursework and planning lessons on his iPad while continuing to cycle.

This day forms part of Chris’s training for a bigger challenge in June where Chris will attempt to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats, which will take nine days and is over 1000 miles in distance, he will again raise money for Action Medical Research. Chris has been set the target of £3000 and has a little way to go so if you would like to donate to this worthy cause go to www.action.org.uk/sponsor/mrbaker

Chris Baker, Leader of E Learning, at John Cabot said, “As an ex PE teacher turned IT teacher physical activity and staying fit is always a priority of mine and if this event encouraged our students to take more exercise then that has to be a positive. Personally I would encourage students not be afraid to take on challenges similar to this and push themselves which is great for them and their personal development.”

Ten bands from across Bristol Brunel, Bristol Metropolitan, King’s Oak, Hans Price and John Cabot Academies took part in the Cabot Learning Federation Battle of the Bands competition at John Cabot Academy.

This sellout concert watched by an audience of students, staff and parents were thoroughly entertained by an evening of excellent musicianship and varying music genres including Acoustic, Rock and Metal.

Backed by a team of Music Tech students from across the federation who operated the sound, lights and special effects this was truly a sensational evening of live music performances.

The competition was judged by a panel of experts which included David Carter, Executive Principal, who put up a prize for the best band and a special prize for the young up and coming band of the night. The winning band will play host at their academy to next years competition.

Steve Clarke, Leader of Performing Arts at John Cabot said, “This was a great chance to showcase talented students from Year 8 – Post 16 and witness the great work across the federation. The students really enjoyed taking part in this event and have worked extremely hard, not only rehearsing and performing but pulling it all together backstage and front of house, it has truly been a team effort from all concerned

Sam then went onto deliver activity sessions with a smaller group of students focusing on the demands of elite sport and the road to London 2012.

To participate in the pentathlon Athletes must compete in five different sports, fencing, swimming, riding and a combined running and shooting discipline in one day.

This visit was arranged by the Wells Sports Foundation’s Athletes 4 Schools Scheme which has set up a number of activity workshops were delivered by Sam to enhance the academy’s, sporting objectives and engage its pupils in the excitement and magic of the upcoming games.

Ms Charlie Hodge, Head of PE at John Cabot said, “This was a great opportunity for students in the Academy to meet someone who will be representing GB and challenging for a medal at the Games. Our students are well aware that the Olympics are taking place this year but the visit of Sam brought the event much closer, inspiring and encouraging our students to actively participate in sport outside of the academy.”
