Ten Year 10 students from Bristol Brunel Academy accompanied Ryan Thomas from Barclays on the first leg of his journey from Bristol to Rome.

Ryan and the Bristol Brunel students set off from Bristol Brunel Academy and cycled to Bath. The students then cycled back to Bristol Brunel leaving Ryan to carry on his 1500 mile journey to Rome.

This mammoth journey is in aid of The Magi Safi project, a charity supported by Bristol Brunel Academy students and staff.  To date they have raised £4,500 with the help of Barclays and a kind donation of coffee from Starbucks Harbourside Bristol, to sell at a recent school open day.

Over 14 days, Ryan will be travelling through eight countries, including crossing the Alps and will be recorded via a video blog which will be shown to the Bristol Brunel students upon his return.

The Magi Safi project is fundraising for a school in Kenya to help provide facilities for pupils, teachers and support for families. The aim is to raise £15,000 to purchase a school bus to assist teachers with educational visits. The bus will also help the school with funding by means of social enterprise at the weekends, thus providing the school with a modest income to support the ongoing education of the children in the future.

Amanda Horrill, Team Leader for Work Related Learning said, “I would like to thank Barclays for helping us raise money for our chosen charity. It is important for us as an Academy to forge links with business and industry to benefit our students and this project is one way in which we can facilitate this.”

Fiona Harrison Head of Sales for Barclays Corporate in Bristol and Somerset said; “As sector specialists in education and charity I am delighted and proud to support our clients both internally and externally. Ryan has given up his summer holiday to support this wonderful charity and I know the satisfaction of bringing years of fun and education support to deserving children will be more than worth it. We are hoping to raise £10 per mile to help secure the full amount to purchase the school bus.
