Written by Dean Blake on 12/02/2010 – 11:27 am -

Six Students from Bristol Brunel Academy are bag packing their way to the Arctic this Saturday in Marks and Spencer’s Store at Broadmead Shopping Centre.

The six, Elsie Elder, Anna Norgrove Shannon Allen-Ross, Georgia Batt, Samira Abokor, and Lauren Gage are accompanied by their organiser and teacher Esther Lawton.

Bristol Brunel Academy is currently liaising with the University of Bristol to utilise the most current evidence researched within the Geosciences Department.

This is the start of many different fundraising events small and large but the girls are 100% committed to achieving their targets to raise £3300 each. We have also been working with help from University of Bristol Geo science Department on scientific projects which we can undertake whilst trekking through the Arctic.’

We will also be visiting an Inuit School. We will have a satellite web link so anyone will be able to follow our progress. The trip will be undertaken in July 2011.

Esther Lawton who is Programme Leader in Work Related Studies and Science said “These students are making an inspiring and pioneering journey. They are taking 18 months to train and fundraise to travel to the Polar region of Greenland for 3 weeks. They will conduct scientific investigations and record data to use back in school. They hope to inspire all young people to dare to dream, be tenacious, have the courage to be motivated and achieve their goals. This is a journey that will change their lives…forever.”
